“A Visit of Charity” by Eudora Welty Essay

Is Eudora Welty successful in showing how human beings can be more interested in their own personal gains than the needs of others? Marian didn’t really want to visit the home for the elderly but she is a Campfire Girl and by taking out the time to go, she will gain points for offering her time to charity work. A gift of flowers was something that Marian brought to the home in order to make her visit look more genuine, but the apple that she brought; she hid outside so that none would think it was also a gift. There was no special person that she wanted to visit, she only wanted to do the job that she came for, earn her point and leave. She wears her Campfire Girls cap to show who she is and she is very afraid to be around a bunch of older people that she has never met, before, but the added point means so much to her that she is willing to visit this strange home. She is more interested in what she can gain from this visit than what she can offer to others. Addie wasn’t thrilled by Marian’s visit. She was a cranky old lady who didn’t even like her roommate and couldn’t stand to hear her talk about a bunch of nothing, all the time. Marian had pretty, yellow hair which she wore a white cap over and she dressed in her red coat as she observed the two women in the nursing home. She had a job to perform and so much to do in her life as she watched the two ladies who had nothing but each other. (Welty, 1980) In â€Å"A Visit of Charity†, Eudora Welty uses Marian as a character who acts in ways that many of us do at certain times in our lives, in performing deeds that are solely for ourselves, and sometimes we forget about the feelings of others. Welty demonstrates in this story that we need to not only try to work toward our own goals but at the same time, we need to consider the thoughts and emotions of others who are less fortunate. Marian is the girl who Welty chose to show that people, especially young individuals, sometimes forget about more important things as we search for awards and points that make us look and feel better about ourselves. To truly feel better about ourselves, we must consider the feelings of others and then we gain the biggest reward of all; knowing that we made someone else’s day a little brighter and more fulfilling. Marian still had many lessons to learn, in life about human kindness, and as she takes a big bite out of the apple, she shows that she had been more interested in her own personal gain in this visit. The author made you think about others in her writing. Eudora Welty clearly showed the selfishness that one can see in Marian’s visit to the nursing home and how she had so much to learn about the true meaning of sharing and giving of yourself in helping others who are less fortunate. I believe that Eudora Welty clearly showed that human beings are sometimes very capable of seeking out their own personal gain in life and are highly capable of not considering the feelings of others, as we do. Eudora Welty successfully uses this literary technique to elucidate the theme of the story, â€Å"A Visit of Charity†. The title â€Å"A Visit of Charity† is rather ironic. Charity means to show kindness and sympathy towards others; however, no one in this story does such a thing. There are no charity from Marian’s, the nurse’s, the two old ladies, and the whole society’s point of view. How can there be charity when the old ladies are isolated from the society. In the story, Marian, â€Å"a young Campfire girl†, sets out a visit to the Old Lady House. She wears â€Å"a red coat and her straight yellow hair is hanging down loose from the pointed white cap all the little girls are wearing this year.† This suggests us that she is not a self-conscious individual. She pays the visit for unquestioning duty since all other campfire girls do so. Her motive is also for the points, which reward on her project. The author also gives way to Marian’s selfish nature when she states to the nurse that â€Å"I have to pay a visit to some old lady.† She shows little respect in the way she phrases her statement. By saying she has to pay a visit reinforces us think that she is there not of her own free will. She does not care who she visits, just as long as the person is an elderly woman. Another irony is used to help explaining the theme of the story as Marian enters the old ladies’ room. When Marian looks around the room, she feels like â€Å"being caught in a robber’s cave, just before being murdered.† She thinks the old ladies are robbers who are trying to steal her perception of the world; however, do they really steal Marian’s view of world? No, I think Marian gets fear because the old ladies give her a broader and truer sense of the reality, which she is reluctant to accept. â€Å"A visit of Charity† by Eudora Welty Essay In the short story, â€Å"A visit of Charity† by Eudora Welty, a fourteen -year old Campfire girl whose name is Marian, visits an elderly home to earn points. The way Marian slowly makes her way from the bus stop to the nursing home shows reluctance. The author’s purpose was to describe a young child’s experience with the elderly through emotions and descriptions of her actions. The author encloses several lurid details to help the readers understand how awful this experience was for the child. The title contradicts the meaning of the story, charity means generosity or kindness towards others, and no one in this story carries that out. People’s selfishness and insensitivity can blind them from humanity and the needs of others. The setting is a winter’s day at a home for elderly women. Outside of the home, there are â€Å"prickly dark shrubs with which the city had beautified the home†. These surroundings imply coldness, and abandonment. The ambiance points to the feeling of fear. The floors inside the building illustrate the awkwardness. The room that Marian ends up visiting is dark, the shade is drawn, and excess amounts of furniture. The wet smell of everything and the wet appearance of the bare floor imply that the cramped room is a more suitable for barn animals rather than humans. Marian compares the room to a robbers cave and the two women as the robbers. The setting of a story assists in painting a mental picture, which draws the reader into the story. (42) Characters bring a story to life; they help the reader connect with the story and its surroundings. The story begins with the young girl who is fearful of the home. The story leads the reader to believe that Marian is the protagonist, and the elderly home is the antagonist. Marian is a self-conscious, submissive, and harsh. She refers to one of the elderly women as an object to be used and discarded when she announces the purpose of her visit. â€Å"I’m a Campfire Girl†¦I have to pay a visit to some old lady†. These words and her frequent thoughts about the points she will get for the visit reveal her real reason for coming, self-gain. An old woman â€Å"Any will do† is an impersonal thing with no identity or personality. She also refers to them as animals in their motions and appearances. When the  girl runs out, she notices that the nurse is reading a Field & Stream magazine. All of these descriptions help the reader to understand what the home is like, and how she sees the world. (42) Welty uses description, symbolism, irony to get across the theme. The theme of the story is selfishness, although it is portrayed through fear. Marian is apprehensive about going into the home, but maintains her state of mind and goes in. In the beginning, the story leads the reader to believe that she truly has compassion. Although, it is a lie, she is there only for points. The author is expressing self-interest. Fear is a part in life and to concur those fears is contentment, but running away is not concurring. Marian does not portray the best image of a kind, cheerful Campfire Girl. Welty further suggests in this story that fake charity can destroy the very humanity it pretends to acknowledge and uphold. People like Marian acting either out of duty or for personal advantages have created the Home and the conditions that have made the inhabitants irritable and unlovable. Marian left the women more lonely and distraught than she found them. This kind of charity is uncharitable indeed.

All the C-H stretching vibrations are weak in intensity. In our case the C-H stretching vibrations were observed at 3083, 3063, 3031 cm-1 in FT-IR spectrum. The calculated wavenumbers at the range 3117–3042 cm-1 (mode no’s: 174–167, 165, 163,162) are assigned to C-H stretching vibrations. All bands have very weak intensities and were obtained in the expected region. As expected, these modes are pure stretching modes as it is evident from TED column in Table 2; they almost contribute around 100%. The C-H bending vibrations of benzene rings for the title compound are observed in the range from 1100 to 1613 cm-1, however some vibrations of the title compound observed at values 1576, 1535, 1375, 1277, 1241, 1182, 1097 cm-1 respectively are mixed with CC and SO stretching vibrations. The C-C stretching vibration is expected at 1450-1250cm-1. The peaks are observed at 1399 and 1375cm-1 in FTIR are assigned to C-C stretching vibrations. The calculated wave numbers at 1375, 1360, 1286, 1277, 1273, 1252, 1182, 1166, 1150 and 1010cm-1 were assigned C-C stretching vibrations by DFT Method. The C-C-C in-plane and out-of-plane bending vibrations are the modes associated with smaller force constants than the stretching ones, and hence assigned to lower frequencies. The in-plane deformation vibration is at higher frequencies than the out-of plane vibrations. Shimanouchi et al. gave the frequency data for these vibrations for different benzene derivatives as a result of normal coordinate analysis. Although some modes are missing in experimental spectrum, however, the calculated CCC in-plane and out-of-plane bending modes are found to be consistent with the recorded spectral values, as seen in Table 2. The symmetrical and asymmetrical bending vibration involves in-phase and out-of-phase bending of the C-H bonds. The asymmetrical deformations are expected in the range 1400-1485cm-1 [roeges]. The bands observed at 1464, 1448 cm-1 in the FT-IR spectrum are assigned as the methyl asymmetrical deformation and the calculated values are at 1448, 1438, 1437, 1431, 1428, 1426, 1423cm-1 by DFT. The methyl symmetric deformations appears with an intensity varying from medium to strong and expected in the range 1380Â ±25cm-1. These bands have been observed at 1399, 1375cm-1 in the FT-IR spectrum and calculated theoretically at 1383, 1361 cm-1. The CH3 rocking generally appears in the regions 1150Â ±30 and 875Â ±45 cm-1, the wave number is coupled to the CC stretching vibrations, which occurs in the neighborhood of 900 cm-1. The rocking modes of the CH3 group are observed at 759cm-1 in the FTIR spectrum and calculated at 1168, 1138, 1129, 1122, 1022, 1087, 969 cm-1 in DFT. The wavenumbers 115, 107,102, 82, 71 and 62 cm-1 of modes 15, 14, 13, 11, 10 and 9 are due to methyl torsion. Methylene Vibrations The stretching vibrations CH2 group is expected in the region 2900-3000 cm-1. The deformation mode of CH2 is expected in regions 1480-1400cm-1(scissoring), 1380-1150cm-1(wagging twisting) and 800-710 cm-1(rocking). In this study, the bands at 2923 and 2859cm-1 has been assigned to CH2 asymmetric and symmetric vibrations in FT-IR spectrum and computed theoretically at 3044, 2945 cm-1 by DFT. The deformation mode of CH2 are assigned at 1431, 1364, 1340, 699 cm-1 theoretically and bands are observed in the FT-IR spectrum at 1448, 1375, 710 cm-1. SO2 vibrations The asymmetric stretching for the SO2, NH2, NO2, CH2 and CH3 etc has magnitude higher than the symmetric stretching.The asymmetric and symmetric stretching modes of SO2 group appear in the region 1360-1310 cm-1 and 1165-1135 cm-1.The stretching vibrations of SO2 for sulfonamide derivatives as reported by Chohan et al. Liu-Gonzalez, J. Borras, Polyhedron 29 (2010) 1305–1313] at 1314, 1308, 1274, 1157, 1147, 1133cm-1 respectively. In the present study, the asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibration of SO2 group is observed as very strong peak at 1348cm-1 and 1163 cm-1 in the FTIR spectrum and 1260, 1241, 1083 and 1040cm-1 theoretically assigned to SO2 stretching modes. The SO2 scissoring and wagging vibrations occur in the range 570Â ±60cm-1 and 520Â ±40cm-1. The corresponding bands are observed for the title compound at 544cm-1 and 499cm-1 in the FTIR spectrum. Carbonyl ester group vibration The carbonyl compound are added functional group includes the C=O bond, also provide very profound contributions to the spectrum. The band at 961 cm−1 in FT-IR spectrum has been assigned to O–CH3 stretching mode. The band at 857(818) cm−1 in FT-IR spectrum is assigned to C–O–C in-plane deformation mode. The band at 784(760) cm−1 in IR spectrum is out-plane deformation mode. The methyl ester has also two characterized vibration modes in 530–340 cm−1 and 390–250 cm−1 region, corresponding to the CO–O rocking and COC deformation. While the nobles endured the negative consequences of the revolution and wars from the previous years, most of the nation dealt with the affects much more severely. The use of death as a punishment has been viewed as â€Å"cruel and unusual,† but in further research the view of what is considered â€Å"cruel and unusual† has been reduced drastically (Berns 31). America’s method of punishments has been reduced from several extremely painful execution method s, to four quick and less painful punishments. They consist of line of execution, gas chamber, electric chair, and the most popular lethal injection (â€Å"Ways† 1-4). The debate about the death penalty consists in both ethical and religious viewpoints. The death penalty should be legalized in all fifty states, to deter from crime, keep repeat offenders off the streets, and alleviate prison costs from the taxpayers. On the other hand, there have been some men and women that have been wrongfully accused and executed for murder. Since the 1900’s at least 416 people have been wrongfully executed causing great concern for the accuracy of the death penalty (â€Å"Death† 4). According to an examination of the â€Å"Death Penalty and Legislature,† Henry Schwarzchild calculated that if the courts were to â€Å"carry out the death penalty for every murder, then we would be executing 400 persons per week (Bedau 366). At the same time this small number of mistakes is nothing compared to the problems society would face without the death penalty. The concern of the death penalty not only pertains to social problems, but also to biblical aspects as well. Walter Berns states many passages from the Bible that support the death penalty, but after careful research he determines that the passages can be interpreted in many different ways. According to ADA, there are about 8.1 millions undiagnosed diabetic patients in the US. With this figure, it is important that we have a proper tool to diagnose diabetes accurately. This will help to devise a proper intervention if the disease is diagnosed easily and accurately. Person with diabetes are unable to use and store glucose, which then stays in that person’s bloodstream and causes blood glucose level to rise. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 is called adolescent diabetes or insulin-subordinate diabetes, where body does not create any insulin. Individuals with sort 1 diabetes must take insulin day by day. Type 1 diabetes generally happens in kids. In the US, five percent of total diabetes patients suffer from type 1 diabetes according to American Diabetes Association. Daily insulin intake with other medication as needed is the treatment of choice for type 1 diabetes patients. In type 2 diabetes, body does not create enough insulin or is not able to utilize insulin as required. Commonly, type 2 diabetes occurs to people who are over 40. Not having or failure to utilize insulin leads to higher blood glucose level, which could damage kidney, heart, eyes, and nerves. Management of type 2 diabetes is complicated. Early diagnosis is importa nt so that proper control and intervention can be done to avoid further damage of organs (ADA, 2014) Person with diabetes will show common symptoms but for laboratory test will confirm the disease. Laboratory testing of person’s blood is important. There are several types of blood tests that can be done to find out blood glucose level of the patient. â€Å"Conventionally, blood glucose levels measured either in the fasting state or following a standard glucose load have formed  the basis for diagnosis of diabetes (Florkowski, 2013).† Blood glucose level could be misleading especially when patients haven’t eaten or are ill (ADA, 2014). So, taking a blood glucose sample at a particular time instead of averaging out over time will not give a correct glucose reading. HbA1C test as a laboratory tool for diagnosing the diabetes have proven to be more precise and conclusive and reflective of the person’s glucose level over time. According to Florkowski, HbA1C provides an information of chronic glucose level instead of a single point in time. It provides an integrated reference of glucose over the lifespan of red blood cells, which is 120 days. â€Å"It therefore seems logical that such a test would be appropriate in diagnosing a disease characterised by chronic hyperglycaemia and a gradual progression to complications (Florkowski, 2013).† Also, the test itself is very convenient for patients because they do not have to fast and a single test is sufficient. Florkowski presents a massive study with 44623 participants aged 20-78 with retinal photographs to show that HbA1C test is as effective as or better than other glucose tests. The study analyzed the relationship between diabetic specific retinopathy and three blood glucose measures.
